Body-worn cameras are excellent tools for police officers because they protect law enforcement as well as the communities they serve. A recent study conducted by The Journal of Quantitative Criminology shows that this statement is true. Thanks to these new findings, it is clear that a body-worn camera will encourage officers to act according to protocol and make it more likely for suspects to cooperate with officers.

The published study explains the results of the first controlled experiment. The goal of the experiment was to determine whether body-worn cameras can reduce the use of force as well as police complaints from the community.

According to Newsweek, the study was conducted by the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology over a 12-month period in Rialto, California. The study found that body-worn cameras reduced use of force by 50 percent in Rialto, and complaints against police fell by 90 percent compared to data from the year before.

“This is a promising tool for police officers, which is likely to be a game changer not only for the professionalization of policing, but in terms of police-public relations,” said Dr. Barak Ariel, a lead researcher on the experiment.

Federal Funding for Body-Worn Cameras?

President Barack Obama proposed earlier in December that $263 million of federal funding go toward community policing, of which $75 million would go toward body-worn cameras around the country.

The call for federal funding comes in the wake of protests surrounding the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
